Understanding the anatomy of the subtle body and the connection with the physical body and how you can utilize that for workshops and classes.

The Five Koshas (Sheaths):

  1. Annamaya Kosha (Physical Sheath)

  2. Pranayama Kosha (Breath/Pranic Sheath)

  3. Manomaya Kosha (Mind/emotional sheath)

  4. Vijnamaya Kosha (Wisdom Sheath)

  5. Anadamaya Kosha (Bliss sheath)

A theory of five selves appeared in the Upanishads (around 800-200BCE).

Later, Advaita Vedanta modified the theory to be a theory of five koshas (sheaths), covering the veil the light of our True Self (Atman)

Our Yoga practice can be seen as a tool to peel back the koshas to bring awareness deeper into ourselvs reaching the innermost core. Yoga practice can be viewed as a tool to unite, coordinate, or harmonize ourselves on the level of the koshas.

The Koshas serve as a guide for yoga practice.

  1. Annamaya Kosha - nourishing the physical body :: asana

    1. Outermost layer

    2. Anna means "food" or "rice"

    3. The sheath feeds our awareness into the other layers.

    4. This sheath provides the ability to sustain the other 4 koshas.

  2. Pranayama Kosha - Energizing the vital :: Pranayama

    1. Prana means "vital life force"

    2. This sheath is composed of Vayus, Nadis, and Cakras.

  3. Manomaya Kosha - Educating the intellect : chanting mantras

    1. Manas means "mind"

    2. This sheath contains mental thoughts and emotional feelings.

    3. This kosha governs perception, object recognition, likes and dislikes, memories, logical reasoning, attachment, and self-identity on the everyday "small self" level.

  4. Vijnanamaya Kosha - refining the personality :: Meditation

    1. Vijnana means - "Wisdom"

    2. The sheath governs intuition, ethical judgment, understanding of the true nature of the world and oneself, understanding what is truly important and what will truly make one happy.

  5. Anandamaya Kosha - Fulfilling in the heart :: Prayer, ritual, praise, hymns, communion

    1. Ananda means bliss.

    2. This sheath contains pure, unchanging, unconditional happiness, joy, love, peace, and ecstasy at our deepest layer of being.

The Nadis

  • Energy channels ihn which prana flows

  • From the sanskrit root "nad" which means "channel", "stream" or "flow"

  • Flow patterns of psychosomatic energy

  • Pathways of Prana

  • Sometimes viewed as extending only to the skin

  • Sometimes viewed as extending to the boundary of the aura

    • Yogic texts say there are thousands of Nadis in the subtle body.

    • Hatha Yoga Pradipika states there are 72,000 Nadis.

    • According to the Shiva Samhita there are 350,000.

Three Major Nadis

The Ida

  • Runs from the left side of the muladhara cakra, intersects each cakra as it ascends, terminates in the left side of the ajna cakra.

  • Associated with right side of brain and the left nostril

  • Its energy is lunar, feminine, cool

  • When active, every is directed to the right brain and intuition, desire, passivity, surrender, acceptance, internal awareness, the subconscious mind and parasympathetic nervous system are enhanced.

The Pingala

  • Runs from the right side of the Muladhara cakra, intersects each cakra as it ascends, terminates int he right side of the Ajna cakra.

  • Associated with the left side of the brain and the right nostril.

  • Its energy is solar, masculine and hot.

  • When active, energy is directed to the left brain and the functions of logical thought, objectivity, action, the sympathetic nervous system, and conscious mind are enhanced.

The Sushumna (Central Channel)

  • Runs from the Muladhara cakras up through the spinal column to the crown of the head

  • Connects the seven cakras

  • When active, wisdom, balanced awareness of inner and outer (or the subjective and objective), and equilibrium between physical and mental energies arise. A meditative state spontaneously arises. The functioning of the central nervous system is enhanced.

Energy flow through the Nadis and the goal of Hatha Yoga

Normal Energy Flow

  • Normally, energy flow alternates between the Ida and Pingala. That is, the Ida will be active for a time, usually about 2o minutes. Then the Pingala will be active for about the same about of time.

  • Sushuma is activated between

  • You can check by doing Nadi Shodna.

Goal of the subtle body practices of Hatha Yoga: awakening or activating the Susumna Nadi

  • This requires the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna to be purified.

  • Impurities that lodge in the Nadis are the energetic residues of desires (attachments) and sensuousness (paying attention to the external world and failing to attend to the internal)

  • Pranayama, Mudra, and Bandha purify the Nadis.

  • Awakening Sushumna also requires that the Ida and Pingala be balanced.

  • When energy flow is equal in both Nadis they stop functioning and the Sushumna is activated.

  • When Sushumna is pure and activated, Kundalini energy from the base of the spine flows upward to eventually reach the crown cakras and unite with pure consciousness. This effects a transformation of the whole being which is the goal of hatha yoga. It is marked by full realization, abiding bliss, and immortality.
